A paid workspace is billed per seat, and each billable person who uses OpenWhispr through it holds one. Settings → Workspace under Account shows current occupancy and paid capacity. Free workspaces can add members too; they have no Stripe seats to bill.

What consumes a seat

  • Every member. Owner, admin or member — by default they all hold a seat.
  • An accepted billable invitation. Sending an invitation does not charge the workspace. If accepting it would take a paid workspace over its current capacity, the invite dialog shows an estimated prorated cost and Stripe adds the seat when the person accepts.
Admins can be given access without a seat. When you invite someone as an admin, you can mark them as admin-only, and they’ll manage the workspace without consuming paid capacity — useful for an IT or ops person who administers OpenWhispr but doesn’t dictate. This is available for the admin role only; regular members always hold a seat.

Adding seats

You do not need to buy a seat before inviting someone. A paid workspace grows to cover live billable occupancy when an invitation is accepted. If you prefer to buy capacity ahead of time, open the workspace billing card in Settings → Workspace and use Add seat. Before it goes through, OpenWhispr shows you the new capacity and the exact Charge today — the change is prorated, so you pay for the rest of the current period rather than a full month. A workspace can hold up to 500 billable members or pending billable invitations. This ceiling also protects Free workspaces from abuse. If you need more than that, talk to us about Enterprise.

Removing seats

Seats are released automatically. Remove a billable member, revoke a pending billable invitation, or have someone leave the workspace, and the subscription quantity drops by one. Capacity that the owner deliberately bought ahead of occupancy remains available; automatic release does not discard those spare seats. There is no separate “remove a seat” button. To reduce occupied capacity, remove the person or invitation using it. OpenWhispr never lowers paid capacity below the number of billable members and pending invitations.

FAQ

It updates once Stripe confirms. If it’s still wrong after a few minutes, tell us — that’s a bug worth knowing about.
When the invited person accepts. Sending the invitation itself does not change the Stripe quantity. The estimate shown before sending can change slightly if the invitation is accepted later in the billing period.
The unused portion becomes credit on the workspace’s account and comes off the next invoice, rather than going back to the card.
